Korean Restaurants (NYC)
I’ve always enjoyed the experience of eating Korean food. Every Korean restaurant I’ve dined in is located on W 32nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. This single block is often informally referred to as Korean Town as it is packed with Korean restaurants. The unique thing about eating Korean food in most of the restaurants on 32nd Street is that you have the option of barbecuing your own food, which is what I’ve always done. Every table has some form of grill. Some of the grills are gas grills and some of the grills actually are heated with hot coals that are carried by your server to your table. The first time my waiter carried over hot coals I was shocked, but they are experts at delivering the coals and everything turned out fine. Once the grill is hot thin slices of meat and some vegetables are cooked up by individual diners and rolled up in leaves of fresh romaine lettuce. If you enjoy barbecuing and/or stir-frying, Korean barbecue can be a fun culinary adventure. Barbecues are often served with a set array of traditional Korean appetizers, some of which I like and some I find too exotic for my liking. I’ve eaten Korean barbecue about three times, long before I decided to write this guide. As a consequence I can only share with you how I find a Korean restaurant when I’m in the mood: I go to W. 32nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues during dinner hours and try to get a table at one of the three most crowded restaurants. |
