The Pickle Guys (Lower East Side) 49 Essex St (Broome and Grand St) (212) 656-9739 When I was young my grandparents lived on the Lower East Side. Some of my earliest memories are walking around the neighborhood with my mother and grandmother, shopping at the discount clothing stores and buying sour pickles from one of the many street side pickle vendors, straight from wooden barrels. Most of these pickle places are gone but the Pickle Guys are still doing it after all these years. The beauty of pickled products is that they don’t need to be refrigerated right away. I often buy a quart, eat a couple as I walk around and put whatever’s left in the fridge when I happen to get home. I also buy their pickled cherry peppers. They’re a challenge to eat but the flavor is worth the heat. |
