The Lower East Side flows right into Chinatown. One day strolling around I decided to try a bizarre looking piece of fruit sold by many of the Chinese fruit vendors. It’s called rambutan. It looks freaky. It’s reddish-brown and spiny and looks like a little alien creature. The vendor cut it open for me, which exposed the amazingly juicy-sweet fruit that covers a pit inside. I devoured it. If you enjoy eating pears I imagine you’ll love rambutan. I usually buy about a half dozen and take some home with me, along with my pickles.
